Definition
The munchies (plural noun, almost never singular) is cannabis-triggered appetite — a sharp, often urgent, food craving that typically arrives 30 to 90 minutes into a session. It is distinct from ordinary hunger in its intensity, its frequent focus on salty/sweet/fatty foods, and its tendency to make ordinary foods taste extraordinary.
Etymology & Origin
“Munchie” as slang for a snack dates to the 1950s and 1960s American English. It was picked up by cannabis culture by the early 1970s and has been universal ever since. The most iconic cultural reference is Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke (1978), which built multiple scenes around post-cannabis eating. In the decades since, the term has spawned countless food-chain marketing tie-ins (Taco Bell’s “Fourthmeal,” Jack in the Box’s “Munchie Meal”) openly courting late-night cannabis consumers.
The mechanism was identified by a 2015 Yale study led by Dr. Tamas Horvath, published in Nature: THC activates CB1 receptors on POMC neurons in the hypothalamus, neurons that ordinarily suppress hunger but that — when activated by THC — flip to promoting hunger. THC also sharpens the sense of smell and amplifies the dopamine reward from eating.
Usage
- “I’ve got the munchies real bad — is there anything in the fridge?”
- “Munchie snacks on the counter — help yourself.”
- “Edibles don’t give me the munchies; flower does.”
Host etiquette: always set out food for a session. Salty, crunchy, and portion-controlled works best (pretzels, chips, popcorn). Guests with the munchies are often too altered to open complicated packaging.
