Definition
Cotton mouth (also written “cottonmouth”) is the dry, sticky, gauze-packed-in-your-mouth feeling that accompanies a THC high. It affects nearly every cannabis consumer at some dose and is usually mild and harmless — just annoying. Best answered with water, not with more cannabis.
Etymology & Origin
The phrase is a direct metaphor: the feeling is as if one’s mouth is stuffed with cotton balls. It predates cannabis culture — “cotton-mouthed” appears in American English from the 1830s onward to describe fear-induced dry mouth, hangover-induced dry mouth, and the venomous Cottonmouth snake (Agkistrodon piscivorus), which displays the white inside of its mouth when threatened. The cannabis application appears to date to the 1940s-50s jazz-scene vocabulary and became universal in stoner slang by the 1970s.
The mechanism was confirmed by a 2006 study published in the Archives of Oral Biology: CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors exist in the submandibular salivary glands, and THC binding reduces saliva production.
Usage
- “I’ve got serious cottonmouth — anyone have water?”
- “That flower gives me cotton mouth immediately.”
- “Cottonmouth is easier to manage than the munchies.”
Prevention: hydrate before the session, not during. Cold, unsweetened liquids work best. Sugary drinks can worsen the sticky feeling. Chewing gum or sucking on a lozenge stimulates the glands directly.
