Definition
A sesh is a cannabis session — a shared consumption event with one or more people, typically including rotation of a joint, pipe, bong, or dab rig. The word is used both for an informal hangout (“come over for a sesh”) and for more structured gatherings like dab sessions, smoke-and-paint classes, or consumption-lounge events.
Etymology & Origin
“Sesh” is simply “session” clipped to one syllable, following the British/Australian slang pattern (e.g., “arvo” for afternoon, “brekkie” for breakfast). The shortened form predates cannabis slang — it’s been used for jam sessions in jazz and rock since the 1950s, and for drinking sessions in British English since the 1960s. It migrated into cannabis usage by the 1990s and became universal with skate, surf, and Deadhead culture exporting it into the mainstream. By the 2010s “smoke sesh” was a stock phrase on stoner YouTube.
Usage
- “Come through for a sesh after work.”
- “Morning sesh or too early?”
- “The canna-sesh at the lounge was BYOC.”
- “That was a nine-hour sesh. I’m going to bed.”
Common compounds: smoke sesh (the default), dab sesh (concentrates-focused, higher skill ceiling), wake-and-bake sesh, canna-sesh (a lounge-industry coinage), sesh strap (a nylon necklace holding a lighter and a glass pipe, late 2010s).
