Definition
A greener is a person who fails to “corner” a bowl — meaning they hold the lighter flame directly over the center and burn through all the fresh green cannabis in a single hit. The word also names the experience: “I got the greener hit” means you inhaled nothing but hot ash because the last person torched the bowl. It is one of the most common breaches of shared-pipe etiquette.
Etymology & Origin
The term is descriptive rather than celebrity-linked. It comes from the color of the flower itself: fresh, unburned cannabis is bright green, while spent cannabis is gray-black ash. A “greener hit” is the one where all the green is gone. The word was in wide circulation by the 1990s in smoking circles on both coasts; it has no single attributable origin.
The “corner the bowl” technique — holding the lighter at an angle so the flame tip touches only the edge of the bowl — predates the slang and exists specifically to prevent greening everyone. A typical spoon pipe can be cornered four to six times; a larger bong bowl, six to eight.
Usage
Used as both noun and verb.
- “Don’t be a greener — corner it.”
- “He greened the whole bowl on the first hit.”
- “I always get the greener hit when I sit on the couch.”
Regional note: more common on the West Coast and in long-established smoking communities. Newer dispensary-trained consumers may not recognize it.

A hemp wick — a length of beeswax-coated hemp string — gives you a smaller, more precise flame than a Bic. Cornering becomes almost automatic. Experienced sessioners keep one at hand specifically to avoid greening the group.
