Cashed — Cannabis Slang Definition

A bowl is cashed when there’s no green cannabis left — only ash. Time to empty it and, with permission, repack.

Definition

Cashed is the state of a pipe, bong bowl, or one-hitter in which all the cannabis has been burned and only gray ash remains. A cashed bowl produces no effect — just hot ash and harsh smoke. The correct etiquette response is to call it out (“it’s cashed”), empty the bowl, and either pack another with permission or return the piece to its owner.

Etymology & Origin

The verb comes from card-game slang: to “cash out” is to take your winnings and leave the table. Applied to cannabis by the 1980s on both coasts, “cashed” entered mainstream stoner film vocabulary with Dazed and Confused (1993) and related films. The word carries a mild finality — the bowl is done, the round is over — that fits the card-game origin neatly.

Usage

  • “This bowl’s cashed — anyone got more flower?”
  • “You cashed the whole bowl on that hit?” (greener territory)
  • “Cash it and pack another.”

Etiquette note: never hand someone a cashed bowl without saying so. Handing a cashed bowl to the next person is one of the most recognized small rudenesses in shared-pipe culture — they light it, inhale hot ash, and everyone laughs but no one is happy.
